Dedza Welfare Trust has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting education and human capital development in Malawi following a visit to Iqra'a University in Blantyre.

Speaking during the tour of the university’s campus at the former Motel Paradise premises, the trust’s secretary Iqbal Makda said the organisation has shifted its focus from relief assistance to empowering communities through education.

“We were just giving food handouts but now have realised that when we educate the people, it benefits the nation,” said Makda.

He commended Iqra'a University for its growth and transformation from the former International College of Business and Management (ICBM) into a registered university institution.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Alfred Matiki said the university has already been registered by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) and expressed optimism that accreditation processes will progress once statutory boards are reconstituted.

Professor Matiki further noted that while the university is guided by Islamic values and principles, it remains open to both Muslims and non-Muslims, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity, academic excellence, and equal access to higher education.

The visit by the trust is expected to strengthen collaboration in advancing educational opportunities and supporting the university’s long-term vision of producing skilled graduates capable of contributing meaningfully to national development. University officials said partnerships with organisations that value education remain essential in expanding access to quality higher learning in Malawi.
